⏰When you’re a goofball embrace the goofball!

When was the last time you listened to your words when you spoke? I mean the actual words. In person, in conversation with prospects and colleagues or friends and family.

I recently went to a networking event with several female colleagues and I was telling stories, laughing and feeling very comfortable. When several new women joined our group and asked what I did, I became tongue-tied.

I struggled to say what I did in a coherent manner. It annoyed me; I’m smart and capable, and I know what value I bring to my clients.

Why was I having trouble? What the heck was going on?

Because I was worried about being unprofessional and over-the-top. I was thinking “What if these women are my ideal clients?” “Would they want to put their marketing in the hands of someone who acts so casually in a work situation?”

But here’s the truth.

You should WANT to show them who you truly are - goofball and all. If they’re going to spend their hard-earned $$ with you, they should know exactly who they are dealing with.

The real deal.

If they don’t like your sense of humour or share your values, THEY AREN’T your people, Reader. You don’t want to work with them either! Trust me. I’ve learned that the hard way. But that’s a story for another email.

There are so many people in this world that need what you do. And they will find your schtick or your stories interesting, valuable and even (WHAAAA?) fun.

The next time you attend a networking - or a family - event, take note of the words you say. No, I mean it. Take notes - I'll wait while you grab a pen.

  • What are some of the words and phrases you use all the time?
  • Do you use contractions and speak more casually?
  • Do you tend to swear (no judgment! I was in the military for 15 years)?
  • Do you use multi-syllable words and speak to a more educated crowd?
  • Or do you try to explain what you do to your 80-year-old grandmother?

That, my friends, is your Brand Voice.

Why is your Brand Voice so important?

It’s how you attract your ideal client, and they know exactly how you’ll sound.

It’s how people get to know, like and trust you because they know you’re “their people.”

When you speak in your consistent Brand Voice, people know what they’re going to get, and they look forward to your emails, Insta posts, etc.

And BEST OF ALL, you’re comfortable, unique and genuine.

And who doesn’t want to be more comfortable? OK, so perhaps not like “slippers at the grocery store” comfortable but more “Joey-pants after a Thanksgiving” comfortable.

Sometimes, it’s your personal brand, and sometimes, it’s your “business” voice. Some people decide they’re the same thing. But others want that separation.

I find it difficult to differentiate between the two. It’s hard (just like math 😅), but that’s a decision you need to make for yourself.

So how do you figure out your Brand Voice?

I love that question! I created this fun 10-question quiz to help you get more dialed in on your Brand Voice. I invite you to take 10 minutes and see whether you show up more formal or as the girl/guy next door.

Until next time, happy quizzing.

Reader, you know how important reviews and testimonials are to your business and your continued success. And you KNOW you’ve got some very happy clients out there. Sometimes, you do everything right. You ask them for a review or a testimonial and they agree. Yay! You give them questions to answer; you explain what information is helpful. And sometimes you suggest (depending on the person, of course!) you could write something they can tweak just to get them started. And crickets. Or worse,...
